George, Dan and Carly celebrate the first week they have all published a new piece in ages (accountability jars work, folks). They also talk about the link between MTV and podcasts, the best and worst of email providers, antifa, and Carly’s plans to become the resident E&A research writer.
Show Notes
- If you haven't heard last week’s episode, that delights George to no end, you can listen to it here
- Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant first invited Karl Pilkington on to their podcast The Ricky Gervais Show, which ultimately led to the trio creating An Idiot Abroad, a show Carly finds hilarious and one that has traumatized George
- According to pretty non-exhaustive research, it was not a Mark, but Adam Curry (MTV VJ) and Dave Winer (software developer) who are credited with the invention of podcasts in 2004
- #ProudBoys has become one of our favorite hashtag takeovers
- Superhuman, an invite-only email experience that George has invited Dan to try out, but the referral link has only made him want to try out Hey even more
- Stop Organizing Your Email, Says Study
- Carly’s latest piece, Key Takeaways from Spotify’s Annual Trend Report
- George’s Start Here: The Touch-Margin Matrix (that Dan editorialized and George loves) led him to his latest, Purpose Not Product: Building a Sustainable Business
- For the next few weeks, Dan will be publishing a new Zoom recording of the podcast every day. If you’ve ever wondered what Dan’s background looks like or how badly we need haircuts, wonder no more
- What is Antifa? This is The New York Time’s answer and here is The Wall Street Journal’s
- Mustard shirt lady
- You can now see a photo of George’s blouse. Finally!
- Bill Hicks Drunk routine, can you recite the alphabet backwards?
- Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard, is one of the writers of Ted Lasso. As is Brett Goldstein, who plays the grumpy but loveable Roy Kent (this is the only coach George recognizes)
- Listen to An Oral History of the Office episode When We Said Goodbye to Steve to hear how sad it is for the actors to say goodbye to a show or a cast mate
- Artist’s Way is unlocking some serious writing in Carly. Join the book club to see if it does the same for you!
Three Things
George, a lady
- Playing: The new board game Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Begins with his son, which he says is an excellent way to onboard younguns (and their parents)
- Reading: Lorne Michaels’ interview Lorne Michaels Isn’t Sure ‘S.N.L.’ Can Pull This Off about making the show during the pandemic, and quoting his response to being asked whether he considered remotely produced episodes “No, we just had to go back. It’s an election year. It’s what we do.”
- Listening: To Belladonna by Daniel Lanois, an album he recommends listening to while working
Carly, also a lady
- Watching: And seriously fangirling over Rhianna’s Savage x Fenty Fashion Show, that is also part music video, part profile into Rhianna’s creative process, that you can stream on Amazon Prime
- Getting Spiritual: With a True North Magic tarot card reading. Carly knows it’s not for everyone, but the occasional tarot, tea leaves or psychic reading has become a part of her self-care routine that is fun and insightful and helps her better identify some of the answers she may already know
- Therapizing: With BetterHelp that gives you remote access to professional counselling via chat, phone calls or videos. Get a free week by clicking here
Dan, not a lady
- Listening: To Good Music To Avert The Collapse Of American Democracy, a 77 track compilation put out by Bandcamp. Their good music compilations only last for a limited time but you can follow it here to be notified about their next release. All proceeds went to Voting Rights Lab. The playlist may be down, but Dan could be compelled to share if you ask really, really nicely (if you donate!)
- Standing: On a Muvmat, a mat that came with his standing desk that mimics the sensation of walking through the forest. Alternative option: wear slippers while working at a standing desk
- Watching: Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires’ Tiny Desk (Home) Concert, which Dan doubts is their real home, but loved the music, the banter and yes, even the stained glass. What he didn’t love, however, was NPR’s rudely placed ad in the middle of the second song
