AUA: I Need to Learn About Investing

George Howard

Hey E&A! I need some book recommendations from the best. I need to learn about investing; how it works, how to reach out to/talk to investors as a business owner, different types of deals, expectations and roles, etc... got any good suggestions? Thanks a bunch.
- Carolyn

Thanks so much for the question. It’s a great one, and has inspired me to write up a more comprehensive answer that I hope will be useful to you and others who are both thinking about investing and trying to determine how to fund your projects or businesses.

Until that time, there are a handful of books and resources that I highly recommend:

  1. Brad Feld’s Venture Deals: Be Smarter Than Your Lawyer and Venture Capitalist
  2. Brad is a really good VC and is worth following on Twitter. The book really does provide the essential details anyone looking for venture funding needs to consider; both in terms of when to raise and how to make the best types of deals.
  3. Another VC who I just think of as a high level thinker, and someone whose book — while not overtly about investing/raising money — is worth reading is Ben Horowitz; the book is called The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers
  4. Their website is full of useful resources: https://a16z.com.
  5. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my friend and sort of musical twin, Andy Weissman, who I hope writes a book one of these days, but he, and the firm he works for, USV, is an excellent source of info. Look, in particular, at their MBA Mondays archive.
  6. Finally, I want to shout out to an amazing female VC, Dana Wright. She was instrumental in not only the funding round for Music Audience Exchange, but for rolling up her sleeves, and helping us find product market fit.

Much more to come here, but this should get you started.

Thank you for the question. Keep ‘em coming.

George
